JnU to Represent Bangladesh in the Prestigious 2020 Jean Pictet Competition
The Jean Pictet Competition, hosted by International Committee of the Red Cross and organised by Comite pour le Concours Jean-Pictet, CCJP (the Committee for the Jean Pictet Competition), is the highly prestigious international competition in the arena of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). It was inaugurated in 1989 its first edition in Clermont-Ferrand of France.
Named after the prominent IHL scholar and principal artisan of the 1949 Geneva Conventions ‘Jean Pictet’, the competition is an ultimate splendor in showcasing the brightest legal minds from the 5 continents around the world. A total 48 teams from different nations of the world are going to participate in this competition. Bangladesh for the first time ever in its history is going to walk in the land of Picteists.
Jagannath University succeeds to be selected as the first team from Bangladesh becoming a part of this glory. A team from Department of Law, Jagannath University will represent Bangladesh (Team e088) in the 2020 Jean Pictet Competition. The team consists of 3 members- Mahmuda Amir Eva, Md. Mohaimenul Islam and Evnat Bhuiyan. The team has been selected for the competition based on the assessment of an essay writing on The Art of War: The Origin of The First Principle of International Humanitarian Law, a written test on IHL and academic profile of the team members.
This is a training and simulation programme on IHL where participating teams go through several sessions and oral rounds for 1 week under the demonstration of tutors and assessed by the jury. The teams perform role playing in an fictitious armed conflict acting as military, humanitarian, political officers, lawyers etc. in a context larger and richer than the sole judiciary context.
The competition is organised in two edition every year- the Francophone and the Anglophone edition. The selected team from Bangladesh will compete in the Anglophone edition of the 34th Edition of the Jean Pictet Competition to be held from 7 to 14th March, 2020 in Denpasar, Indonesia. Due to the team being top in the list of assessed file of the steering group of the competition and being the first as well as the only selected team from the country, the team is also selected to be generously sponsored by the Universality fund of the CCJP and the Swiss Red Cross.
On a same note, Ahmed Ehsanul Kabir is going to be chaired as one of the Anglophone Jury in this grand global competition. He is also the first person from Bangladesh invited as a judge for Jean Pictet 2020. Mr. Kabir is a Barrister-at-Law who previously acted as a panel judge in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, 2019’s Final Round at Washington DC, USA and International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition, 2018’s China Round. He is currently serving the Department of Law of Jagannath University as an Assistant Professor.
