Seminar on legal Profession held at Supreme Court

To support Lawyers to improve their potential, Chittagong University LLM Association (CULLA) organised a seminar on legal profession at Supreme Court Bar Association on last Sunday (13/11/2022).

The theme of the seminar was “Changing Role of the Legal Profession in Bangladesh: Issues and Challenges”.
The seminar started with the welcome speech of its member Cristine Richardson, Chairman, Department of Land Management and Law, Jagannath University.

Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, Professor and Dean, faculty of law, University of Chittagong, presented his keynote paper.

Mr. Justice Obaidul Hasan, Judge, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, was present as Chief Guest on the occasion while Mr. Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud, Senior Advocate was present as special guest.

The panel discussants of the seminar were: Mr. Justice Md Habibul Gani, Mr. Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, Mr.Justice Jafar Ahmed, Attorney General A M Amin Uddin, Supreme Court Bar President Momtaj Uddin Fokir, Culla’s ex-president Md. Rofiqul Islam Sohel.

Professor Dr. Abdullah Al Faruque, in his keynote speech said that the challenges of the legal profession, especially advocates in the era of globalization are very serious. Competition is getting tougher even though the advocate profession is still much needed. He also addressed the gathering on professional ethics.

Mr. Faruque discussed on the importance for a lawyer to acknowledge the risk and danger involved in the matter. One must proceed with cautious steps in representing someone because one mistake can lead to loss dignity of lawyer.

Discussing the opportunities of the legal profession, especially advocates, Senior Advocate Rokanuddin Mahmud shared his experience on how he managed to run his career as an lawyer.

On the other hand, Attorney General A M Amin Uddin explained the challenge of being an advocate. According to him, success of being an advocate requires a long struggle and a great effort.

“We must maintain ethics and loyalty and work seriously. An advocate is said to be successful if he/she can make his/her client feel comfortable through his/her performance“, he said.

Mr. Justice Obaidul Hasan, Judge, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, said that practicing law is a very challenging profession because there are no source of income at the initial stage and one has to make many sacrifices.

“Being a lawyer, one also has to know all the things starting from the smallest to the biggest task. Starting from stitching one’s petition, to filing, editing, cross-checking and framing an argument, a lawyer must know how to do all these things in order to be efficient”, said Obaidul Hasan.

“In spite of all the hardships you will face along the course of your profession, it is the impact you make on someone’s life that that makes the profession a fulfilling one”, he added.

The Chief Guest also stressed on the importance for a lawyer to be up to date with not only the law but in other subjects as well.

“By virtue of being a learned counsel one should behave in a gentle manner and must be willing to learn through participation, practice and dedication”, he said.

The association secretary, Barrister Helal Chowdhury, moderated the discussion.

The seminar was chaired by association president Barrister Syed Md Tazrul Hossain. Mr. Tazrul cordially thanked everyone present for participating in the seminar.
